Hydrocarbons in essential oils

Aromatic hydrocarbons, also known as arenes, are hydrocarbons that have at least one aromatic ring and are found in most Essential Oils. Hydrocarbons can be gases (e.g. methane and propane), liquids (e.g. hexane and benzene), waxes or low melting solids (e.g. paraffin wax and naphthalene) or polymers (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene). There are two main groups of essential oil constituents that define the chemistry of essential oil. They are hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds. These are further subdivided into sub-groups that are listed below. Monoterpenes – are present in almost all essential oils.
